Sammy's Tragic Hero

Was Sammy a heroic character or a coward in the story? I believe he was a hero. He stood up for what he believed, and I think that's heroic not cowardly.

Sammy was a hero for standing up for the girls. He believed they should have been able to walk around the store and not be judged for what they were wearing. He judged the girls at first, but then he started feeling bad for the girls.

Sammy was being judgemental towards the girls because they came in the store wearing bikinis. He called one,"chunky" one "queenie" and he called the other one "tall".

He looked outside the window of the A&P and the first thing he sees is the town church. He instantly regrets judging the girls. Then he turns to their side and takes up
