The story, A&P, by Johan Updike, is about a nineteen-year-old teenage boy named Sammy, who works as a cashier-clerk in the A&P grocery store. Throughout the story, he describes his job and action happen at the store, and how those actions change him as a person. Samy seems not so proud of having clerked job at the store. As the story begins when these three rebellion girls in a bathing suit entered in the A&P represented Sammy's imagination of freedom and desire for a change in his dull daily activities. Sammy is willing to quit his job for a girl that he does not know and face consequences.There are three important factors explain his character and his relationship with other characters in the story. When Sammy asks to not embarrass those girls in reply the manager blame girls to wear inappropriate clothing in public. According to Sammy, he prefers to leave the job and stand up for the girls and not have the manager treat them like that. This part of the story represents Sammy’s morals and ethical side. For instance, he has to make some choices and he decides to take action despite not knowing what he will do in the next minutes or what his future holds for him. “My stomach kind of fell as I felt how hard the world was going to be to me hereafter”(Updike 443), this shows that his actions may impulsive, but he means what he wants. He digests his harsh words and expects the consequences of his spontaneity, but it seems he made his first move of adulthood and man with morals. In conclusion, the short story, A&P, by John Updike, is about a dynamic character Sammy who’s personality is changing from teenager to adult through his views on the regular customers, his reaction to the girls, and in his decision to quit his job.
