Same Sex Marriage ( Ssm ) Essay
Historically, same-sex marriage is forbidden in many countries, including Canada. The early response of Canadian to the same-sex marriage was unfavourable and viewed in a negative way. Graham, Swift and Delaney (2000) explain that in 1967, same-sex marriages were considered as a dangerous sexual offender under the criminal code when a man involved in sexual relationships with other men.
As compared to the United States, Canada legalized SSM in 2005 after all the legal and political influence, but the US after the significant decision of the Supreme Court in 2013 of marriage equality is still away from SSM (Pierceson, 2014). Canada provides full recognition of SSM through common law marriage policies and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, which developed equality rights (Pierceson, 2014). Moreover, the definition of marriage in Canada comes under the control of federal jurisdiction.
