Gay Marriage Should Not Be Legalized Essay

The American dream, “The ideals of freedom, equality, and opportunity traditionally held to be available to every American.” With this dream in mind, Americans still believe that same-sex marriage should not be legalized. As recent debates and public votes occur the majority of Americans voted ‘yes’ for the Constitutional Amendment that bans gay marriage. But doesn 't that contradict what the United States was built on? Many homosexual people across the country are still fighting for their basic human rights when they should not be. Many people believe that “traditional marriage” is between one man and one woman. But who is the person that dictates whether or not ones marriage is legal or not? The first amendment states that, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion.” The amendment clearly protects the right to religious freedom, but also confirms that the Bible has no relevance to the American law. Religion is not supposed to be the deciding factor of our country’s laws. Likewise, the majority of people that are against same-sex marriage are religious and are trying to persuade people to believe what they believe because they think it is the right way. But like the first amendment says, people have the right to believe what they want to believe. One can agree with the argument against gay marriage because of ones religious beliefs. One can also agree that under the first amendment no one has the right to impose rules, beliefs or opinions on anyone solely because they believe it is a moral issue with the Bible. Not everyone has the same morals or values. The supports of gay marriage are not trying to fight the opponents, religious beliefs nor are they asking for acceptance into that religion. They are fighting because they are trying to break free from religion in deciding the laws of this
