Whether or not to legalize same-sex marriage has been a highly controversial and debated topic in the United States for many decades. In the 1970s, the first civil suits seeking marriage rights of same-sex couples were brought to U.S courts but did not prove successful. Not until 2004 did same-sex marriage see its first statewide legalization in the United States. Today, same-sex marriage is legal nationwide as of June 26, 2015. However, the ruling is still met with opposition from groups such as The Family Research Council.
