People should not be denied the right to marry under these circumstances because it would be unfair and degrade their social status. Gay marriage bans are taking away the rights of what people should be entitled to. These bans result in injury, discrimination, deprivation of same-sex couples and their families of equal dignity. It also labels and treats them as a socially inferior class and deems them as, “Unworthy of participation in one of the fundamental institutions of our society” (Head). In the worst case possible inheritance rights would also be included in the marriage. The option of filing a joint tax return for tax reduction is also another benefit. US residency and family unification for partners from another country can lead to easier family relations that marriage could bring. If a married couple were to divorce they would be able to protect themselves financially and possibly settle disputes of child custody. The US armed forces provide certain benefits such as health insurance that would otherwise be inaccessible to other relationships or partnerships. Married couples are also granted tax, retirement and health insurance benefits by the IRS and US department of labor. However, the US federal government does not grant equivalent benefits to gay couples in civil unions or domestic partnerships to those in a marriage.
