Same-Sex Marriage My opinion has not evolved in the past years since same-sex marriage became a hot topic in the media, mostly because I myself, am gay. Everyone should be given the right to marry whomever they want without any restrictions, but I can understand that others have opinions that differ about this subject. When discussing legislative history, public opinion, family and child development, and marriage benefits, same-sex marriage should be accepted in society and same-sex couples should be given their rights and benefits.

Polls have been ran to gather data of the public’s opinion, and it is clear that in the past ten years the American Society as a whole has changed their views on same-sex marriage. In 2003, 55% of people who were polled this question "Do you think it should be legal or illegal for gay and lesbian couples to get married?” answered yes that same-sex marriage should be illegal. Yet, in 2013, only 36% of the people polled answered yes to same-sex marriage to be illegal. This year, different political party officials were polled the same question with 66% of Democrats being for the same-sex marriage, and 36% still against. The Roman Catholic church opposes same-sex marriage, stating that “marriage is a faithful, exclusive and lifelong union between one man and one woman,”. The United Church of Christ, in 2005, became the first major Christian denomination to give official support to same-sex marriage. More fundamentalist churches, such as the Southern Baptist Convention, however, have actively opposed same-sex marriage and homosexuality. Though certain religions may or may not support same-sex marriage, attitudes among churchgoers may differ considerably from those of church officials. (“Same-Sex
