Love comes from within; not based on gender. Now that same-sex marriage is legal in all fifty states, it is only a matter of time before same-sex adoption will become a norm. On June 26, 2015, the Supreme Court ruled same-sex marriage legal in all fifty states, and newly married couples are seeking to create a family. With so many children in the foster care system, same-sex adoption would increase the adoption rates tremendously. Same-sex adoption is an incredible opportunity to provide children with a stable and healthy living environment.

In the United States, same-sex adoption statistics have proven that allowing same-sex adoptions will increase adoption statistics. According to Life Long Adoptions, “More than 16,000 same-sex couples are raising an estimated 22,000 adopted children in the United States” (LGBT Adoption Statistics, 2016, para. 5). Same-sex couples have taken in over 20,000 children in the United States. This is a significant number of children who are given a home where they are loved. In the state of Nebraska, there was at one point a law that restricted LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transsexual) families from fostering. This law forced LGBT families to go through five review processes, whereas a heterosexual family would only go through two. John Colborn, a Lancaster Country District judge, removed this law declaring that the state agency “cannot adopt a new procedure without rescinding a previous policy that is “wholly inconsistent” with the new rule” (Duggan & Hammel, 2015, para. 12). Although many families would like to adopt, they are unable to do so by the restrictive societal views and laws. It can be argued that same-sex couples do not want to adopt; however, this has been proven to be false.
