The Artificial Human There is a situation that most humans have encountered. People can be in public hoping and praying for a text or a notification on social media, but cringe at the idea of another person sitting next to them on public transportation and possibly striking a conversation. This is an example of the five-foot circumference that most Americans have created that they like to call “personal space”. There once was a time when people craved social interactions and face-to-face communication.…
Entertainment has been around for a long time, back then it was just shows, stand up comedians, radio, and newspapers. However in this day and age, entertainment has changed drastically. It has evolved into digital streaming, television, internet and mobile devices. Anyone can have access of entertainment at any given time now that has taken a toll of people now. Society today is too interested in mindless entertainment that has become the norm in our society.…
Closeness or Personal Space (Proxemics) Each culture, and even within cultures in terms of rural and urban living, has different levels of physical closeness appropriate to different types of relationship, and individuals learn these distances from the society in which they grew up. In today's multicultural society, it is important to consider the range of non-verbal codes as expressed in different ethnic groups. When someone violates an 'appropriate' distance, people may feel uncomfortable or defensive.…
Jane Jacob starts off chapter 3 talking about judgment and the profound misunderstanding of cities. She compares testimonial banquet to the social life of city sidewalks since they are both public and bring people together. The city sidewalks are used for various reasons from meeting someone, socializing and even public contact. Trust is also very important for sidewalks so that they can be safe places to contact. A matter of city privacy is talked about throughout the entire chapter.…
“The segregation of recreational space” examines the segregation laws in Los Angeles and how it affected other races most notably African Americans. Los Angeles had a perception of being a place full of opportunity and sunshine when in reality there was still racial separation mostly between the African Americans and the Whites. African Americans were eventually excluded from recreational sites such as public pools and beaches that had whites. They were even made to pay taxes for recreational sites that they would be unable to participate in. However, with the help of the NAACP the African Americans were able to end the policy that separated races in beaches and pools.…
In the article “Is Facebook Making Us Lonely”, Stephen Marche discusses the effects and utility of network in people’s life. Marche establishes how Facebook is making us more isolated and replacing deep connections from society. He also demonstrated that isolation is an option in which we are blinded pushed towards by social networking. As stated by Marche, the things that you post in Facebook are a reflection of yourself.…
I was very drawn to and amused by William Deresiewicz’s essay in the Chronicle of Higher Education titled “The End of Solitude.” The main thesis of the story is asking a question about what has prompted our dwindling desire for solitude. Once considered an expression of personal freedom or even a pleasure, just the thought of being alone nowadays is met with anxiety and evasion. I 'm not going to dismiss Deresiewicz as another Luddite technophobe, because his work is more nuanced than that. Instead, I will focus on bit selection, hoping to engage people in a dialogue about the blessings and dangers of the electronic age.…
Another challenge I can foresee can come from blurring boundaries and to clarify I mean, there can possibly be more self-disclosure than need…
According to Desmond Morris, human behavior is caused by three things: Tribal, Family, and Personal Space. He claims that most human will fight, defend, and create their own personal territory. History has shown that human behavior like wars, killings, fights, the marking of territory has been associated with territorial behaviors. Most people feel the necessity defend what is theirs. Morris is accurate in his statement, and in today’s modern generation, those behaviors have been shown with tribal, family, and personal space through new technology.…
Having power over our lives and decisions defines the term, sovereignty. Indigenous sovereignty has many barriers, which prevents Indigenous people from having the right to choose their decisions. Trick or Treaty?, a documentary by Alanis Obomsawin, and Sharing Space and Time, a book by Lee Maracle, includes the barriers to their sovereignty. Indigenous people face many problems, and struggles along the way. From the European settlers until now, First Nations experienced genocide, residential schools, a school where Indian children were forced to learn English and Catholicism, and the barriers to their own sovereignty.…
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury has many similarities that relate to the world that is lived in today. In the book the city was just like the society today, before everything had slowly changed overtime. Technology was important and everything else, like books, faded away. The citizens, including Beatty, Montag, Faber and Mildred are blinded, and think it's ok for books to be burned and don't question anything. Until one day where Montag decides to actually look into the books instead of burning them.…
This can be defined as affiliation, “the basic need for the company of others” (Dwyer, 2000). Based on Dwyers findings, this could be reflected in the actions on Facebook as although an individual may appear to be in a social situation, if when they log in to the site day after day and find that no one has made contact with them it could feel as if they are in a form of cyber solitary confinement. Dwyer states that solitary confinement is one of the greatest punishments one could inflict on another (2000) so the same could be said for Facebook confinement, but in metaphorical terms, looking through the window on what others are up to by surveying their social interaction. If a friend / acquaintance (which seems to be the case in many circumstances as Dunbar discovered (in Lewis & West 2009) that we only actually interact with 5 out of our (on average) 150 friends in the offline world. However this framework can be applied to the online Facebook world as the average user has 130 friends (Facebook, 2010b).…

Boundaries is the degree of closeness within the family (Herring, 2015). Everyone has their own boundaries. The boundaries can be either open/flexible or closed/rigid. During my time with the guidance counselor, I have noticed that she has to watch how she speaks with the parents of the children she works with. Mrs. Gunnell the counselor has been trained to watch what boundaries she can and cannot cross with the parents.…
