The pain began slowly, pricking me with its sharp needles only while doing barre in ballet once a week. I ignored it, believing it to be normal, common discomfort that would soon go away, typical thoughts of a dancer whose entire sport is centered around “good pain”. Six months later, it had escalated to the degree that every step I took felt like an arrow to my knee. Dancing had become impossible, and it was determined that I should be taken to the orthopedist. The bland, brown and beige lobby became extraordinarily familiar as I waited two hours to be examined.…

When listening to the podcast it really opened my eyes to see what students in lower class public schools feel about people like me who went to a private school. From what the podcast described people who went to University Heights they were 97% black and Hispanic, Kids who wore hoodies, Jordan’s, and looked like “hoodlums”. Those that attended Fieldston Progressive were preppy rich kids who could afford anything they wanted and were those who were expected to go to college unlike those that went to the public school. The public school children come from families with parents who didn’t attend college, who have minimum wage jobs, and who either neglect or don’t care about their children and their future. The private school children have parents who have high paying jobs, who want to see their children succeed and push them to be their best.…

Growing up, I noticed, when approached with conflict, my sisters and my mother would often state that they did not want to talk about it or would simply leave the room. I now have a phrase for this: the exit response. For us, the exit response was always temporary. If the problem was serious, it would eventually be brought back up; if it wasn’t, then things usually got better on its own. While my dad is often the first to use the voice response, I have noticed that my dad often chooses the loyalty response, too.…
