Samuel Moore Walton was born on March 29, 1918, in Kingfisher, Oklahoma. He was the first born son of Thomas Walton and Nancy Lee Walton. His father was a banker, farmer, farm loan appraiser, and his mother worked as a real estate agent. Very early in his life, his family moved to Missouri, and he was raised there (Biography.com Editors). Sam began showing his entrepreneurial gift early in his life when started selling magazine subscriptions at the age of seven, and he would put these skill to use later on in life. He began his eighth grade schooling in Shelbina, Missouri, and this is when he became an Eagle Scout (Martin, Kim).

He started earning $4,000 to $5,000 a year. He finished college in 1940 with a degree in business. Sam Walton began his first real job at JCPenney in 1942, and he later returned to Oklahoma. He was drafted into the military on July 16, 1942. He served in Company A, 777th Military Police Battalion, and he spent three years serving in the military (Martin,Kim), and he reached the rank of Captain and he began working in intelligence (Biography.com Editors). He was married during his time in the service on February 14, 1943 to his wife, Helen Robson. The couple's first child was born in 1944 and three more children would follow (Martin, Kim). They open their first Ben Franklin Five and Dime store with a $25,000 loan from his father-in-law (Biography.com Editors).
