One of the most substantial benefits of this work is that it brings out the human aspect of this war. As a society, we are introduced to World War II as young students and we continue to learn about this global conflict for the rest of our academic lives, and because of this we become desensitized to the subject—we stop seeing and feeling the human aspect of this war and others like it. We begin seeing this war just as something that happened, just as an event, and this happens to most of our history, and the way we pull ourselves back to a human standpoint, is by reading the writings of those who actually experienced these atrocities. A textbook usually gives a broad outlook on the history and is predominately just a factual work to give you a historical explanation of what happened. On the opposite end of the spectrum is a primary source, which gives you an example or personal look at the history through an individual’s eyes. While some would argue on which source of information is better, they are both important. To achieve a comprehensive view of history you need both of these sources: you first need a general knowledge of the subject, which can be provided by a textbook, and then you can delve further into the subject by using personal accounts, such as sergeant Solomon’s to develop your understanding of the history as well as giving it
