Marilyn Reese Sheppard was found dead in her bedroom on July 4, 1954, and the crime scene contains evidence that Sam is the culprit. Significantly, she was brutally hit twenty-seven times with a blunt object and died from her own blood. As Otto Grahm, friend of the Sheppards, …show more content…
Sheppard was the only witness of the actual murder, and therefore, his account is the only to go by, but some of it seems fantastical. Before the actual murder, there is a single significant fact that holds another witness. According to the Aherns, who were visiting the night before, Sam and Marilyn went to bed in different rooms (Linder, 2017). After this point, all that can be told is what Sam reported. In his account, Sam was saying that he was asleep when Marilyn called his name. During the interview, he said, “I charged into our room and saw a form with a light garment, I believe” (Linder, 2017). The doctor was either shaken up or pretending to be as he described the night in vague details. Next, Sam said that he grappled with the form in his bedroom. He claimed he was knocked out, came to, chased the form down to their lake shore, and was knocked out again (“Sam Sheppard,” 2017). The supposed killer would have escaped at this point. Then, Sam gave information that is hard to think of as true. He said that he woke up with his shirt and watch stolen, yet his wallet, in his back pocket, still held money (Linder, 2017). The question presents itself as who would steal a man’s shirt but not his wallet? Generally speaking, Sam’s account is difficult to …show more content…
For instance, some claim that Sam’s injuries were almost impossible to self-inflict, but they did not think about the one other person who was obviously there. Marilyn could have given him those injuries (Linder, 2017). The claim also states the injuries were almost impossible, meaning it was possible. Additionally, the killer was left handed, while Sam was right handed, but this claim also has an explanation. Sam could have been holding Marilyn down with his right hand and hitting her with his left (Linder, 2017). This is a very probable explanation, as a victim being killed would most likely resist, and especially if Marilyn did cause those injuries, then Sam would have needed his right hand. Furthermore, none of the blows were the cause of death, indicating that the killer was not a very strong person, and although this is true, the killer was hitting with his left hand. Right handed people experience ten percent less grip strength in their left hand compared to their right (Petersen, 1999). Had Sam been hitting with his left hand, he would not have been as strong. Therefore, Sam is still the obvious
