America has always been this safe haven for foreigners. Just like a lighthouse, the Statue of Liberty has piloted people to a place where they know they’ll be safe; to America. A man named Sam Saragusa was lead here from Italy, along with his parents and his four siblings. They arrived in this alien world lost and confused, knowing no one besides themselves, with nowhere to go. Despite being scared, they set off for their new, and improved, lives in America. They didn’t have many personal possessions to bring with them, although, they did own these comforters, that were composed of duck feathers, and they were apparently fairly expensive and without hesitation, they sold their duck feather bedding. Once money wasn’t an issue, they had to begin their life. After considering many individual jobs, as a family, they decided to buy a grocery store. During the day, they would all take part and help around the store. While at night, they all lived above the supermarket in a two bedroom apartment.
Whilst living in Buffalo, New York, there were many little mom and pop stores. Being one of many doesn’t make you very unique though, and being like everyone else won't reward you with more customers. Sam was determined, altruistic, and selfless. Just like John F. Kennedy said, in the Immigration Contribution, “every aspect of the American economy has profited from the contributions of immigrants.” An immigrant doesn’t have to invent the flashlight just to make an impact. All those people who Sam visited and delivered newspapers to, profited from his generosity. Sam Saragusa is my great-grandfather, and he is one of the reasons why I am blessed with the life I have today and I am eternally grateful for how hard he worked to provide for his current and future
