Salvation In A Thousand Splendid Suns

In the world some people undergo struggles in life but one day they will be saved from those struggles. For example, a small unloved child can grow up to become a powerful person. In Khaled Hosseini’s A Thousand Splendid Suns, Mariam a bitter girl who lives in Kabul during the 1970’s, experiences the death of her mother, early marriage, and abuse from her husband. Mariam is naive and disillusioned becasue of her father Jalil. She starts to have callous towards Rasheed and she finally gets salvation after she kills her husband. Mariam had to endure being lied to by her father and she continues to be naive and disillusioned and she finds her salvation. Jalil’s unwillingness to see Mariam as a legitimate child makes Mariam feel naive and disillusioned because she still trys to be accapted by Jalil and his wives and Nanny continues to tell Mariam the truth. In the beginning of the book when the wives told Mariam they found her a sutior Jalil didn’t want to say anything to stop the wives from marrying off Mariam. Towards the middle of the book Rasheed made Mariam eat rocks which that added more fuel to her fire of callousness towrds her husband Rasheed. In the end of chapter 15 Rasheed says “Then he was gone, leaving Mariam to spit out pebble, blood, and fragments of two broken molars. This means that Mariam was starting to be abused by her husband in which Mariam would creat more of a reason to be callous toward Rasheed. Towards the end of the book Mairam kills her husband and saves herself and Laila from multipl years of abuse. In the end of chapeter 46 Mariam said “ It is fair, Mariam said “ I’ve killed our husband.” This says Mairam had to save herself and be a salvation for Laila and herself.
