Salvation Army Service

This semester, I volunteered at the Salvation Army for twelve hours for my Introduction to Human Services course. The Salvation Army is a fundamental Christian church. It holds services on Sundays and programs and connections to help the people in need. It was founded by William Booth in 1865. The agency’s mission is to spread and preach the word of God. Also, to help people meet their needs. The organization has become worldwide and has spread across 127 countries, which countless locations. They help people of any ethnicity, race, gender, sexuality, culture, background, and etc. They encourage unification and peace and love. In the location I volunteered, I discovered that meals, bread, work, food, and filing your income tax for free is some …show more content…
I thought it was going to be crowded and cluttered with people. There would be homeless people all over the hallways and it’d be disorganized and messy. This perspective came about when I was a young child in elementary school and children would make fun of other kids, insulting them on their clothing and their need for Salvation Army services. Knowing I was one of those kids who shopped at the thrift store, I didn’t say anything but agree. A number of people I associated with, spoke rudely about the agency. I never been into one but my parents did shop in their thrift stores. However, when I walked through the doubled window doors, my point of view changed drastically. The hallways were clean, cleared, and smelled like Pine-sol. The ladies were nice and assisted me to Ms. Rosemary’s office. The folks that were waiting in the entrance to speak to the front desk receptionist were complete sweethearts. At 12 PM til 1 PM, the Salvation Army has lunch for the public. You could go in, sign in, sit down, eat, and take some food home. I went to eat with another volunteer I knew from high school and it was a huge eye-opener. On my way there, I watched a homeless young adult argue with his mother on the phone. When I sat down, I observed many people coming to eat. There was a woman rushing inside with her two daughters, eager to eat and drink. They continued to nervously look at their surroundings as if they were …show more content…
They do all they can to reach to other facilities and agencies to get the job done. They care about people and have the best interest for the community/population. The Salvation Army cannot promise everything and that’s a downside to the organization. They will try and, most of the time, accomplish, but with certain things, it is not always guaranteed. When I answered the phone, there was a woman who was looking for furniture vouchers because she did not have a table to eat on or couches to sit on. I asked Ms. Barbara about that and she said they do not do that. That means the woman will have to buy them on her own or have someone donate theirs. Overall, I think this was a wonderful project for my first course in college and I appreciate. Now I am certain that this is the field for

While volunteering through the Catholic Charities group, I got to experience both the Sanitation handout room at the Dorothy Day center as well as work in the prep kitchen at the faculty warehouse. While volunteering in the Day center we were placed in a back room that had two service counters on opposite sides of the room. Those counters opened into the bunk rooms of the center and were organized by gender, sorting the women onto one side and all the men on the other. Between the bunk rooms our room had shelves of supplies and handouts that the clients could request. Some of the supplies that we had were personal items such as deodorant, shampoo, body wash, lotion, etc.…

For our civic engagement project for the Redefining Leadership class, my group, Stephanie, Hailee, Christina, and I, decided to volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House in New Haven, Connecticut on a Thursday. Before we got there, we did not know what to expect, but afterwards, we truly felt grateful that we helped out a great cause. The Ronald McDonald House is a charity house that keeps families close to their family members that are being treated at a nearby hospital. We spoke with someone who works at the House and she told us that eight families were there on that day. We were able to see some people and did what we could to help out.…

I was able to volunteer at a local bank that was sponsoring the Lake Park Elementary School for the holiday season. The school has over 300 underprivileged students between the ages of kindergarten and fifth grade. Most of the students at that school only have one meal per day. Along with other volunteers, I packaged bags that contained candy, toys, toiletries, a blanket, and a pair of athletic shoes. The bags were able to provide the children with goods that we often take for granted.…

During my two volunteer experiences I participated in for the service learning portion of this class, I had the opportunity to witness many different walks of life. I was taken in on a side of poverty I’ve never before seen, and on a very intimate level. My first volunteer experience this semester was at a local food pantry, the Pratt-Quigley center. The neighborhood around the food pantry seemed very run down and poor. Shortly after arriving there, we were directed to the room where all the food was stored after it had been donated, waiting to be sorted.…
