Everywhere we look, poverty and sickness has a presence. Whether it be in the international news or right down the street at the nearest food bank, people struggle to survive. Through the compassion and determination of some people though, poverty and sickness can be combatted. Today, I will be talking about three religious leaders who stepped up and went beyond the call of duty to combat sickness and poverty. I will be talking about what they did to combat poverty and sickness and the type of legacy they left behind for future generations to follow.

Features of a quasi-military structure include uniforms, grooming standards, rank, chain of command, show ups, formations, honour guards, and direct orders and discipline. Salvationists believe that their continuance in a state of salvation depends upon continued obedient faith in Christ. Salvationists work towards bringing salvation to the poor because they believe that they were called up by God to meet human needs in His name without discrimination. Salvationist offer practical help to the poor and destitute while preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Salvationists believe in human dignity, justice, hope, compassion and community. This is why Salvationists work with people who have fallen on hard times. These include veterans, people suffering from addictions, the elderly, the poor, convicts, etc. Today, they operate food banks, thrift stores, homeless shelters, international disaster reliefs, sponsorship programs (sponsoring Syrians to come emigrate), and many more services. Modernly, there are more than 1 million members of the Salvation Army in more than 127 countries. What are the causes of poverty within that region: London around the 1870s was growing at an unprecedented rate, so poverty was at an all time high due to high living costs and lack of job opportunities. Alcoholism was also a huge problem in London.
What was the Government involvement in this area: The Government gave little assistance to those who needed it. Booth saw this, so he stepped up and did what he could to help them.
Major types of illnesses in this area: Due to the poor environment conditions (poor hygiene), there was no shortage of diseases in London. Some of the most serious illnesses include Smallpox, Cholera, Tuberculosis, and alcoholism and drug abuse.
Religious population of this area: Most people between 1870s and 1900s in London were Anglican or some other form of protestant. The Salvation Army fit right into the religious population of London and helped to preach the gospel of Jesus
