Salvation Army Angel Tree

For the most part growing up in a middle class family and in a fairly small town like Saginaw makes it easy to think that everyone else is just as financially stable as your family. This can lead to the mind set that really low income families live in a different city, state, or even a different country. Sometime it takes the holidays to realize that families who have trouble to provide necessities for living live right in your community, and can't financially afford to provide a dream Christmas for their children which provides hope through their struggles. The importance of understanding this and then applying action is highly encouraged through programs such as The Salvation Army's angel tree of which I've taken a part of, and applied to …show more content…
Particularly the Salvation Army angel tree does live up to their claim of “doing the most good” by fulfilling Christmas wishes and needs for nearly 59,000 individuals. They also stand on the roots of Christian beliefs that center on the love, grace, and forgiveness of God through the redemptive power of Jesus Christ. Uniting with a program that believes similar to me was important and allowed my commitment to increase. Other research steps I had to take was deciding what type of gifts would be appropriate for the children I had adopted from the angel tree. I was privileged to have taken part in helping to make a difference in the lives of two children named Ayden and Sofia. For me I felt that I was giving more than a gift, but I was also giving joy. Taking into account that both children are six years old meant that I had to explore the interest of children that age. Thankfully due to the Angel tree program I was provided with a list of the children's wants and needs, and was most intrigued in Ayden’s request for a soccer ball. I personally am apart of the soccer team at school and was more than willing to give a gift for someone with similar interests. As well as for Sofia who wanted anything involving the Disney movie Frozen, which made me remember when I would get dolls of my favorite movie characters. Not only did I purchase the wanted gifts requested, but also the needs that were asked of such as jackets and long sleeved

My group, consisting of Deja Calvin, Jasmine Begley, Raphael Genato, Marina Thacker, Courtney Carr, Ralph Tamakloe, and Glory Chuma, plans to organize a clothes drive through the school. The clothes we collect will go to a homeless shelter for use during the winter months. The purpose of the drive is to directly help the homeless population in Virginia Beach when help is most needed. Before the idea was formed, I knew that Goodwill takes donations for the less fortunate. Also, in our school National Honor Society has a can food drive early in the school year, and NJROTC holds a toy drive near Christmas.…

For my sixty hours of volunteer work I decided to volunteer at a Child Life Center which was in a poverty stricken area in Norfolk, Va. At the child life center my job as a volunteer was to assist the children with their homework, help the staff monitor the children on local field trips, as well as serve as a positive role model for the children. The experience I had at Park Place Child Life Center was one I will honestly never forget. Although I didn’t get any actual counseling experience, I was able to learn the ways that the non-profit organization received their funding, I was able to gain experience in working with the youth, and I was also able to make a positive impact on the lives of children who were considered “at-risk youth”. To go there every day and be able to see the change the children had in their behaviors and how much just some attention and affection from adults impacted their behaviors was honestly amazing.…

"The Sesame Street Video" and "The Gift of the Magi" have some very interesting similarities and differences. They are similar in that all characters in each story loved and valued Christmas more than imaginable. Both are the same because it seems that all the characters once again all care about others feeling more than their own and they are just really thoughtful. The differences between "The Sesame Street Video" an "The Gift of the Magi" are that they both have different taste, for example, while Jim and Della like expensive items; sterling silver watch and tortoise combs with jewel rims. Bert and Ernie on the other hand like little things with sentimental value in them; rubber duck and collectable paper clips.…

The first one, Furry Friends, was significant because I was able to gather and purchase goods and necessary items that a pet shelter needs on a daily basis. I was able to demonstrate Service by supporting the adoption of the dogs that currently had no…

More than one billion children in the world are deprived of at least one of the basic necessities. According to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) "children living in poverty are those who experience deprivation of the material, spiritual and emotional resources needed to survive, develop and thrive, leaving them unable to enjoy their rights, achieve their full potential or participate as full and equal members of society". Poverty limits children's opportunities for education, puts them at risk for health problems and increases the likelihood that they’ll be subjected to child labor or early marriage. Poor children are hungry and at risk for malnutrition, underdevelopment and stunting, which can have serious health consequences later…

A community event that gives me great pleasure is The Salvation Army Christmas Dinner. Over the years I sign up for one hour shift, which is a standard shift, and end up staying for the day. To me, it is more than just the honor to serve a meal to those less fortunate; it is to be an ear for them to tell a joke, to be the smiling face or to give a hug to send them on their way. So quickly our lives can change and any one of us could be in the same situation. Being in that environment reconfirms my belief that everyone’s story is different and we cannot judge based upon an outer appearance or a person’s current situation.…

Spending time with a five year old, going for a walk and talking or driving in a car or just playing with him will be better than flourishing him or her with…
