The Salton Sea is one of North America's largest saline lakes, which was re-created by a levee break of the Colorado River in 1905. Historic evidence show that the Colorado River had spilled over several other times. By the time they were finally able to stop the breach in 1907, a 45 miles long and 20 miles wide salt water lake the Salton Sea had formed. The Salton Sea quickly became a tourist destination. According to an article in The Associated Press, racing became very popular in the late 1920's the "high salinity made boats more buoyant and, at more than 200 feet below sea level the barometric pressure improved performance."
