It was my Junior year of high school, in both my AP Seminar and French classes we had been discussing air quality issues in Salt Lake City, Utah. However, as most students became annoyed at the constant discussion of these issues I became inclined to gain extensive knowledge pertaining to the ongoing air quality issues that were constantly affecting me. I became interested in this topic and the idea that maybe somehow I could make a difference. The air quality in Utah is extremely bad due to the increasing amount of pollution being emitted into the air. Utah is famous for its oil companies and we are one of the top ten oil producers which is one of the biggest reasons that the air quality is, in fact, so bad. “Poor air quality, …show more content…
I believe that if students are made aware through a certain curriculum, embedded into one main subject such as Science, the ways in which they can reduce the amount of pollution emitted into the air and how they can make a difference at a young age or even in their teens maybe they could change the lugubrious direction in which the world is headed. I began to focus more on the Salt Lake City area and the schools in Shale School District because this is the school District that I am a part of and I felt that it had a greater affect on me, my peers and my community. In the community there are many programs that can have a huge effect on the environment if people participate. One of these include, a program called the Air Toxics Under the Big Sky program. “Developed in 2003, the Air Toxics Under the Big Sky program is a collaborative endeavor among high school science teachers and scientists at UM’s (University of Montana’s) Center for Environmental Health Sciences (CEHS) and Department of Chemistry. To date, over 400 students across seven counties, two states, and two American Indian reservations have completed the curriculum and conducted indoor air quality research that has resulted in an overall heightened awareness of indoor air quality’s impact on our health.” (The …show more content…
One of these pieces include Evaluation of environmental education in High School Science Courses across Salt Lake City, Utah by: Florence Fernandez. This research piece indicated which courses environmental education would be best implemented into. It states, “In reality, environmental education is simple an interdisciplinary continuation of the biology, chemistry, and other science courses that students take in their high school classroom.” This piece influenced my research in the age of students and the courses I studied. Next, I researched a piece called Current Research in environmental education, this research had indicated several studies done about environmental education. One of the studies done depicted in the research included a study dealing with the success of teacher-transfer attitudes. Lawrenz (1987) conducted this study by exposing these teachers to in-service programs and then decided if the teachers attitudes toward environmental conservation were transferred to the students. The result was that the transfer did not take place. I then decided from this that it would have to be a set chapter implemented into a distinct course or
