Charlie's Nightmares: A Short Story

The year is 2035 and Charlie just turned 16. She had the most marvelous sweet 16, she got everything she wanted. And something she never thought possible. The night of her birthday is when it began. The nightmares she started to have were horrifying, filled with such evil things. She had a nightmare of people she knew dying. For months these nightmares continued and repeated over and over. Six months later, the first nightmare she had came true, her cousin died. Charlie was spooked, how had she dreamed about her cousin dying six months before hand. Soon everyone she dreamed about died, several cousins, friends, aunts, uncles, her grandmother, and even her father. She saw all of these “deaths,” then she started to get suspicious. Charlie began thinking about what her mother said. She started to plunder through the house to find any records she could. Finally, she found some journals, some were your mother’s, others her father’s, and…….. her grandfather’s. Charlie had never met her maternal grandfather, the story she knew was that he ran off when her mother was young. This made her think maybe he didn’t run off. It was getting late and Charlie was exhausted after processing all that information. She fell asleep. She began having another nightmare, this time it was in black and white. She saw several segments of time, in the past. She saw her grandmother’s house. A man and a woman standing in the front yard of the house. Then there was a flash and she saw that man carrying a baby into that same house, it turned out to be her mother, which made the man, her grandfather. A man appeared in the shadow, this wasn’t a person Charlie was familiar with. He approached her, with a knife, prepared to kill. To her surprise, Charlie used her knowledge to outsmart the demon. She ran to her parents’ room and got her mother’s journal she had started to read. It said, “Salt hurts evil, including demons make a salt circle and stay in it. There’s a gun that has been in the family for generations hidden in a special place in the closet that can kill a demon with one shot. I need to keep this journal because one day I know Charlie will need it.” Charlie ran without even thinking to the closet and was looking for the gun, she heard the devil’s minion coming up the stairs. She poured the salt at the opening of the closet, while she continued to look for the weapon. As soon as the evil demon bursted through the door, she found it. Aimed to kill the evil monster that killed her family, she pointed the gun at him. As she pulled the trigger, she realized the gun was empty. Without even thinking she started to throw salt at this evil creature, he began to scream in pain. She was able to find one last bullet, while the demon was distracted with
