Salmonellosis

Salmonellosis is a type of infectious disease that is caused by a bacteria of the Salmonella genus, which is named after its discoverer, a scientist called Dr. Salmon. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Salmonellosis is very common and causes about 1.2 million cases in the United States each year. Although the disease seems to be common and harmless, it could also be deadly, in some severe cases, when the bacteria spreads from the host’s intestines to the bloodstream to other parts of the body without the presence of antibiotics. The sources of Salmonella are predominantly from food animals and their products, such as eggs, milk, cheese, and meat. After Salmonella is transmitted to the host, usually from the consumption of contaminated food or through contact with one’s eyes, the infected people usually will show symptoms of headaches, fever, diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps that would last for the duration of four to seven days. Most people will recover, usually without any treatment, after getting sufficient rest and staying hydrated as their immune systems successfully fight off Salmonella. However, some people might not recover as easily because they are at a higher risk of the Salmonella living and reproducing due to their weaker immune systems.
