How the Salem Witch Trials Went Down
Arthur Miller was born in Harlem, New York in 1915, his father owned a coat manufacture company and his mother was an educator who read a lot of novels. As he grew up he almost lost everything because of the Wall Street Crash in 1929 which caused him to move from Manhattan to Flatbush, Brooklyn. After high school he had a couple of jobs before he was able to save up enough money to go to the University of Michigan. It was then he went on to be a well-known play writer. He wrote many different plays and his most famous one is The Crucible. The Crucible takes place in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692 when Reverend Parris’ daughter, Betty lies in bed unconscious. When the local doctor says he does not know what caused Betty to become sick Mr. and Mrs. Putnam says their daughter Ruth is also ill in bed. Then on September 19, Giles Corey is pressed to death and on September 22, eight more people are hanged at Gallows Hill. Also on that day Mary Herrick of Wenham, Massachusetts claims she saw the ghost of Mary East saying she was innocent and never did witchcraft. After this no one else is hanged and are set free, In May of 1693, Governor Phips frees the remaining people who were accused of witchcraft. The Salem Witch Trials was a very bad time to be in. Many people were accused of witchcraft and were hanged. The people who were accused, arrested and found guilty had an unfair advantage. It could have been a whole act and tons of people could have been in on it. People turned against each other and when this happened witchcraft was seen everywhere. Even people who were against the trails were accused of witchcraft. The Salem Witch Trials would’ve kept going until there was no one else to kill and the small town would be empty with the people who accused everyone left in it, if it were not for Governor
