The Salem Witch Trials is a gloomy snapshot of the United States’ past. The trials occurred in the winter of 1691-1692. The trials resulted in nineteen unethical hangings and hundreds of grievances. The trials resulted from multiple forms of conflict. The forms of conflict would include economic gain, personal gain, and division of the town. The ultimate cause of the Salem Witch Trials would be multiple girls avoiding punishment for their transgressions against the Puritan faith. These girls used their imagination and knowledge of the church to invent a fabrication of witchcraft throughout Salem. Tituba was a servant of minister Samuel Parris. Many scholars believe Tituba was from Indian descent and was forced to admit to witchcraft by her master, reverend Samuel Parris. During this time, Minister Samuel Parris was new to Salem. He, unlike previous Puritan ministers, preached God was unforgiving and spiteful. Many of the townspeople had afflicting views with the new minister. Due to the afflicting views, many people stopped going to Mass. Parris believed these people were out to destroy him and were possessed with an evil spirt. After Parris’ daughter and her friends were found participating in an unmorally conduct, the witch hunt began. Parris easily convinced the girls to attack Tituba and others who look the part of a witch to justify his sermons. Tituba admitted to witchcraft crimes and blamed Sarah Good and Sarah Osborne of bewitching her. This spark ignited paranoia of witchcraft. According to Benjamin C. Sarah Good was known for being a town beggar. Sarah and her family, owned no land and frequently asked her neighbors to support them. When her neighbors refused to help, Sarah would chant or yell a string of words to express her inner feelings. This led many people to believe she was enchanted by the devil himself. Also, Sarah Osbourne was an obvious target. When Sarah Osbourne attempted to take her son’s inherited land for her husband, her family soon acknowledged claims against her. They, in fact, added to the list of claims against her. The Puritans believed anyone who would attempt to take land away from their own children had to be possessed by some unworldly, evil force. After she died in prison, her sons received their inherited land. Many Puritans believed this was an act of God restoring his land to those in God’s favor. This one example leads many historians to believe jealousy and revenge, also, increased the amount of witch hunt
