Most have heard of the witch trials that took place in Salem Village in the late 1600s. According to historians, these trials are Puritans’ final attempt in trying to preserve their religion. The famous Salem witch trials captured the attention of thousands over the years, thanks to the trials’ gory legend. Astonished by these trials, movie producers saw the potential of making a captivating movie within the folklore surrounding the trials, but sometimes they focus too much on the legend instead of the truth behind the trials. One film, named “Salem Witch Trials,” stands out compared to others. This movie, directed by Joseph Sargent, drew the attention of numerous people thanks to the leading actors and actresses. In creating a movie based on real events, sometimes movies portray events accurately, and other times Hollywood producers tend to romanticize them. In “Salem Witch Trials,” the writers, for the most part, gave an accurate representation of how life was in Salem Village in the early 1690s. However the movie may truthfully portray life at this time, the first thing the movie got wrong was the seasons in which the trials took place. In the beginning of the movie, there was a brief slide of information about the witch trials. This slide says the beginning of the trials took place in Winter of 1691, and the second half of the movie stated that Spring of 1691 was ten months later. Obviously, if the trials began in Winter of 1691, the second part of the movie would have to take place in Autumn of 1692 in order for ten months to pass …show more content…
Although many films focus on scenes involving a romance to gain popularity, the movie “Salem Witch Trials” did not focus on any one situation like romance the entirety of the film. That is not to say there was no concentration on romance or anything a regular movie may show to draw the attention of audiences. In fact, there were many scenes surrounding the love life of Joseph Putnam and Lizzy Porter. Along with this love story, the movie focuses greatly on the family rivalry between the Putnams and the Porters. Although this fued between the two families was true to an extent, the movie seemed to portray it as more extreme than it actually
