Salem was founded in 1626 by Roger Conant and other immigrants from Cape Ann. When they originally settled in Salem, the town was called Naumkeag; however, the settlers preferred to call it Salem, which is the Hebrew word for peace. These settlers lived in peace until a new group of people came to Salem seeking a home. During 1628 John Endecott brought new immigrants to Salem from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The two groups had many conflicts but had to learn how to live in harmony. During 1692, the vast majority of settlers in Salem followed Puritan beliefs. This meant that they did not believe in the ways of the English Church. They did not have elaborate churches with intricate stain glass windows and cushions on pews but instead, they only had, “wooden benches without cushions” and “no stain glass windows” (Holub 21). The Puritan belief was that the Bible was the law and they followed the Bible very strictly. During the War of 1812, Salem played a vital part. The First Provincial Assembly of Massachusetts was held in Salem. Salem was also a sanctuary that housed many Privateers. Since Salem was also a harbour city, Salem captains would even bring warships to different parts of America and became very
