First of all, Vera is the main deceiver in the story. When she meets Mr. Nuttel she instantly knows she has an opening to mess with him. She tells him that the window is open for a reason. Telling Mr. Nuttel that Mr. Sappleton went out hunting three years ago and still hasn't returned makes him confused. Vera tells him, "Poor aunt always thinks …show more content…
Vera not only tells him the story to freak him out, but she continues to make faces and uses body language that sells the story. When the men returned home he is completely unaware, but when he looks at Vera he realizes whats happening. "The child was staring our through the open window with dazed horror in her eyes." He allows himself to fall for the deception because she truly commits to the story and even tell the end sells it. Mr. Nuttel runs out without another glance because of this crazy deception.
Clearly, a good deception has many members that take part in the story. Vera was a great deceiver and sold the story to the full extent, but it may have been a little too far. She has the personality of a joker that allowed her to hold on for so long. Mrs. Sappleton, although not knowing she assisted in Vera's plan. Of course, Mr. Nuttel was deceived by a young girl playing a prank, but it really messed with him. There was so much they all did to support the theme of deception that Vera's act was perfect in her
