Sakamoto Ryoma, born in 1835 and died in 1867, was an anti-tokugawa samurai who revolutionarily influenced not only the nation but, societal beliefs, values, cultural behaviours, political endeavours and Japan itself. The significance of his legacy continues to inspire and express the importance of equality and pride for the country he belonged to. He felt very deeply in equality, something the Japanese society lacked resulting in Sakamoto developing a strong hatred for the Tokugawa Shogunate system. Once becoming a ronin Sakamoto began to secretly work against the Japanese Shogunate. His first course of action was to assassinate an official of high class ranking in the tokugawa shogunate by the name of Katsu Kaishu, unexpectedly though sakamoto was swayed by Katsu not to kill him but to become his apprentice. Katsu taught Sakamoto political, economic and law practices and together they desired to increase military power and strength to defend themselves against the world. Sakamoto was able to construct, lead and negotiate a confidential alliance against the Takugawa Shogunate. Sakamoto clearly demonstrated his significant competence in doing this as he brought together two of the biggest provenances in Japan even though these provenances were major enemies. Sakamoto and Katsu worked together on their desire to develop a modern day navy to that would be of equal rivalry to the Tokugawa naval forces. Sakamoto then established an exclusive naval and shipping company to transport weaponry and machinery for the revolution resulting in him being known as ‘Father of the imperial Japanese navy”.
