This is a small statue placed in the end of the European art exhibition area at Art Gallery Ontario, named Saint Sebastian. Using ivory as material, this statue looks bright and white under the light of the gallery; however, if people look closer, they can observe the lines of the ivory all over the statue. Viewers would first be attracted by the statue’s expression and position. The expression and position of Saint Sebastian is extremely vivid and real. Firstly, his expression is very dramatic. Another interesting point is that although his body is strong, his muscle is fine and ideal, the obvious ribs on his chest still show that the character’s live is tough and suffering. The techniques of this statue are also noticeable. The muscle, vessels, toes, fingers, curly hair, and the cloth on his buttocks all seem very natural and detailed, making this statue so real and vivid. There are also some parts of this statue seem mysterious. Firstly, there are several small holes on the statue, and it is hard for people to point out whether these holes are meaningful, functional, or not made on purpose. Last but not least, there are some cutting trace on statues’ arm and elbow, which look like the arm had been cut and set back

The four characters are adjacent to one another. The composition is arranged so that Hercules and the eagle stand out. The front view acts as though it is separate from the back, since the resting male seems unbeknownst to the violence, although both views are constructed side by side. The space and perspective is the platform that sets up the limitations of the frame. While the dynamic movement shows the statue’s need to immerse the viewer, the space constraint provides the frame restriction in the first place.…

He is the same colors all over, the whitish and grayish hues of the marble that was used. More color may have taken away from the expression or “movement” being made by the statue. Most of the texture found in the sculpture is in the curly hair and beard, but even then there isn’t much, making the hair on the head and in the beard look soft. The deeply carved robes and beard give contrast to the rest of the body, making it stand out with its light and smooth look.…

The cannon was used as an ideal system of different lengths and ratios of the human body to show what the ideal man looked like in Greek culture.
