Saint Patrick's Catholic Church

For this assignment I attended a Catholic mass in Spanish at Saint Patrick's Catholic Church in North Hollywood. Growing up my parents hardly had any interest on attending masses or teaching us their beliefs passes from their parents, considering my grandparents are very religious. The only time I would attend a mass is when there was a service memorial, so I have little experience with Catholicism. I decided to go to a Sunday mass on October 4 with my friend Stephanie and her family, since they go every Sunday. We arrived early about 20 minutes to find seats. The mass began at 10:30 AM with some people rushing through the door at the last minute to find any available seats. In my own experience, I thought church began with socializing between …show more content…
There was one woman who dropped to her knees at the threshold and made the sign of the cross, while another woman only made the sign while standing. One family near us got on their knees together and prayed as soon as they entered the pew. Then I saw a young girl who quickly bent at the knees next to the pew, and then sat down, while the rest of her family simply walked in and sat down. That action interested me the most because it was a child performing a religious act with no reinforcement or model of the behavior from her parents, and yet she still performed the act. As service was about to start the building was filled, some people didn’t get a chance to find a seat so they ended up …show more content…
There were a variety of children in attendance, and even more people who looked to be in their twenties and thirties. The majority, it seemed there was people over fifty. The entire crowd was Hispanic and it was difficult to characterize a social class among attendees, because everyone was dressed nicely, but no one appeared overdressed. If I had to classify the mass as anything, I would say that it was mainly middle class. The clothing among crowd was a little more casual than what I am used to. I saw a good number of people wearing jeans and some people in t-shirts. There was one priest leading the service, and one woman who would step up to assist the priest with the lectures. The woman was dressed as the rest of the crowd, while the priest was dressed in simple robes.
The building was quite large and decorative. The ceiling was extremely tall with a lot of high arches. The front of the altar had an imagery of Christ, although the priest’s podium itself was nothing fantastic, although the podium did place the priest for everyone to view. There were stained glass windows depicting Jesus and Mary lined both sides of the cathedral and reached up to the ceiling. There was also a large woodcarving portraying the crucifixion of Jesus, which looked particularly gruesome to me. I think that the reason the woodcarving is portrayed is to remind worshippers of the suffering he had endured.

On Sunday, May 1st I attended a Catholic mass hosted by Reverend Gilday at Little Flower Catholic Church. The church was divided into 3 sections, north, south, and west of the altar in the center. It was a traditional mass given on the Sabbath, a required day of worship. He gave his speech through a homily during the mass reflecting upon the reading from the bible, but he also created a unique message driven from this reading. He started off the speech with a comfortable confidence and soft-spoken yet attention-grabbing speaking voice.…

The changes during Vatican two were very prominent in the development of Modern Catholics. The main goal was globally expressed in strengthening and unifying the Christian denominations to create an ecumenical community. Initial changes to the Mass were substantial as they were created in attempt to welcome and get more people involved through Liturgy and Sacraments followed by the changes in the Eucharist that modernized the Mass so people felt more welcome to attend mass. In attempt to understand the differences that divided the Catholic Church against other Christian denominations, the Greek term Ecumenism was formed. Ecumenism was designed due to the denominations hindering the Churches efforts to spread the gospel.…

Experiencing a “New” Form of the Mass In my ninth grade year, my Greek teacher, Mr. Jason Lalonde, S.J., gave us an extra credit opportunity—to attend a Mass in the Extraordinary (Tridentine) Rite of the Mass. I had never been to a Tridentine Mass before, so I didn’t know what to expect or think. Since I wanted a little cushion for my Greek grade, I decided to try this out; and my grandparents, who enjoyed bringing me to the Mass, attend the Mass almost every week.…

Being in a church setting, I did not want to break many norms, or be overly intolerable because I knew that many people would be very upset. From breaking the norms (sitting down while everyone else stood up to sing, texting, ect.) the people got upset, but not upset enough to leave the service. I think if I would have continuously been disruptive and annoying, people would have left, or told me to leave. I thought that it was very interesting that while they sing, they stand up, while at my church (Baptist) we don’t stand for every song we sing.…

The impact that Greco-Roman had influence upon the development of religious architecture had an enormous effect on things. The Greco-Roman effected the art styles, the agriculture, and the types of religious that were being practiced in that time period. The architecture that stood out to me the most would have to be the different types of buildings that where created. The basilica is the most unique one in my opinion “the basilica was not a new architectural form”. (Farber)…

This Ritual Observation Project will be discussing my observations at Saint Teresa of Avila Catholic Church. I went there on June seventh to gain insight first hand into the Catholic Church’s rituals and beliefs. I will begin by breaking down the entire mass that took place during my observation then I will compare and contrast Catholicism to Baptist Christianity (my religion). When I first entered the area where the mass was to be held at, I began to notice the exquisite detail and the Stations of the Cross, which shows Jesus’ crucifixion. The pictures that show the fourteen Stations of the Cross can be found in my Saint Teresa of Avila Catholic Church PowerPoint presentation.…

For this reason, I wanted to visit a Catholic church. I reasoned that…
