Saint of Failure
Saint Bridget of Sweden, was born in June of 1303 her exact date is still unknown. She was born as Birgitta Birgersdotter in Uppland Sweden. She was the daughter of Birger Pertersson and Ingeborg Bengtsdotter, her family was very religious. They attended mass and went to confession every week. Her father also made many journeys to holy cities. When Birgitta was ten years old her mother passed away, leaving Birgitta, Catherine, her younger sister and their new born brother. They were sent to live with their aunt who feed and educated them throughout their lives (CANT FIND).
Birgitta was very young when she had her first vision or dream about seeing Christ. She was in a dream and Christ appeared to her and showed her, “The Man of Sorrows” she describes this dream or vision in great detail. This was her first vision and she never forgot it, it followed her sub-conscious. (CF)
She married when she was fourteen years old because, in this time period, it was the common age of marriage. She married Ulf Gudmarsson. Together they had eight children, four boys, and four girls. Surprisingly, all their children lived which was uncommon in this age. Birgitta and her husband made a journey to Santiago di Compostela. She had mentioned something about going to the Monastery in Vadstena, but in reality she had never seen it with her own eyes. Everything she planned on doing in life was never accomplished. She wished and dreamed of accomplishing many of these things, but never has happened. Many things she saw visions of but never have happened are, the Pope did not stay in Rome, peace was never made between England and France, her vision of a nun or becoming one, and when she said she was going home to Sweden she was actually dying
