Saint Francis of Assisi was born in 1181 in Assisi, Italy to Pietro and Pico di Bernadone. His father was a wealthy textile merchant, and had an intense love for all things French. When Pietro returned from a business trip in 1181, he was outraged to find that his wife Pica had named their newborn son Giovanni. He renamed Giovanni to Francesco, or “Frenchy”, which was later shortened to Francis. Saint Francis was baptized at the Cathedral of San Rufino on March 28, 1182 on Easter Vigil of Holy Sunday, as was the tradition of that time. As a child, Francis was extremely extroverted and vain and was disgusted by the lepers and the ill. He was also the leader of a societas iuvenum (a boy’s club), and was extremely fond of drinking alcohol and throwing constant parties. Francis also likely attended the hospital of San Gregorio for education. …show more content…
This caused Italy to be divided between the two groups and caused intense fighting among neighboring cities. Saint Francis was an extremely greedy man at that time, and used the war to his advantage. He joined a military campaign for wealth and honor at the age of 19. His hometown of Assisi had declared battle against the neighboring town of Perugia, which opened up a path for Francis to gain more glory and fortune for himself and his family. During the battle, Francis was captured and taken as a prisoner of war. He was held captive for over a year and was released in late 1203. Although he was not treated as badly as the other prisoners, Francis still suffered terribly from post-traumatic stress disorder and severe depression. Two years later, in 1205, Saint Francis joined yet another military campaign to try to place Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II on the throne of Sicily. However, after only a day’s journey, Francis decided against it, and began to journey back

In his working papers, which would be his early rule, he outlines the basic idea of his way of life. A part of his rule that tries to restrict the dealing with money is changed as Thompson describes,” Francis immediately modifies this hard rule and allows the collection of alms for lepers when there is dire necessity. “But let them beware of money,” he cautions” (Thompson 98) Francis would be a mix of a realist and an idealist, since he would want his order to maintain its poverty status yet he makes an exception for the most marginalized group, the lepers. Francis would assert the idea of poverty and the rejection of the material world, even more in his official rule.…

He pursued simplicity. This does not mean that he was lacking intellect, it means that he was successful at eliminating everything from his life that did not enhance his understanding and love of Jesus. He is easily comparable to St. Gerard Majella as she had, as well as Francis, a deep compassion for animals, she even had the ability to communicate with animals. I admire St. Francis for his humility and for his love for the people around him, he loved them so much he gave everything he had to help them. Many people, especially now a days could not give up a life of wealth, even if they hadn't earned it, to help the poor.…

Saint Pio of Pietrelcina was a man of miracles and wonders. Not only did he create a long string of controversial accounts of apparitions and visions, he also created a legacy of followers, all praying to him for miracles and guidance. Famously known for the stigmata, amongst many other supernatural occurrences, he was a determined man dedicated to his vocation of service and prayer. We can all only hope to be as dedicated to our goals as he was, especially during those fifty years of suffering with the stigmata. I chose Padre Pio as my saint for his dedication to his mission and his immense love for God as shown through the many years of his life.…
