Saint Elizabeth's Vacation Bible School Experience Report

In the August of 2016, I volunteered my time, talent, and skills to help “instruct the ignorant.” This is a Spiritual work of mercy, as instructing the ignorant helps us grow spiritually and emotionally while helping our neighbors. During this week long experience at Saint Elizabeth’s Vacation Bible School, I spent my time helping young, innocent children learn music that lifts praise to God. The whole experience was exhilarating. While this might seem trivial to some, it was a very fun and enlightening experience to me. I am sure that some of those children didn’t care much about what we did during the musical period and were mostly just happy to be dancing around instead of paying full attention, but I hope that others really took what we learned and used it to help them grow spiritually just as I did. …show more content…
Many of them looked overjoyed and excited while singing and learning the music. I hope that I helped teach them that singing is not only a fun activity, but that they could use their singing voice to pray to God in a unique way. At the same time, I feel like this experience helped me grow, as well. I learned that I had a talent for sculpting young minds and I actually pondered the fact that maybe I could eventually become a teacher in my adult life. With this new found enjoyment, I felt that the Lord was there with me everyday. He inspired and guided me to give my all to those children and helped me to teach them with my fullest

In chapter six titled Music, Music, Music, the author discussed the importance of musical development, musical intelligence, components of music, selecting appropriate music, instruments, and making music. Musical development spans from infancy to primary grades. Isabelle and Raines (2012) stated that “understanding the unique characteristics of young children during specific developmental periods can provide a framework for developing a responsive curriculum,” (p. 187). Musical intelligence refers to the ability to understand pitch, melody, and rhythm at an advanced degree. Once children began to explore music with instruments, they begin to make music using chants, lullabies, songs, and body parts.…

I don’t know how the wonderful music history of Memphis pass me by but somehow It did! I have always heard that Memphis is known for its music history, especially the blues, but I never investigated the theory for myself. The instructor at the college challenged me to write a paper about the history of the Stax Museum in a reflection paper and I am really glad she did. It influenced me to finally take the time to view the history of Memphis firsthand starting with the Stax Museum. The research, museum, and the informative information my teacher taught in class helped me to learn the original name of the company, showed me the good and bad experiences with the company, taught me the meaning of music terms in the music company and lead me to…

It was the first day of our medical mission trip. The 13 of us were divided into four group: triage, clinic, pharmacy, and faith. Colin, Laure, and I sat in plastic white lawn chairs, facing the locals who sat on three wooden benches. We had prepared a short, spiritual lesson to bring Jesus’ love to the rural cities of the Dominican Republic. When I welcomed them in their native language, their faces softened.…

This summer, my dad, older sister, and I flew to South Carolina for debate nationals. Since we had a few days before the tournament, we decided to do a little sightseeing. On Sunday, we visited two churches in Atlanta, Georgia. We first went to the Ebenezer Baptist Church, which is a church housed inside the “real” church that Martin Luther King Jr. had served in. The service was very lively, consisting of clapping, singing, and dancing.…

Many Christians contribute the moral decline of our country to the fact that the Supreme Court mandated prayer in school was unconstitutional fifty years ago. Is it time to put God back in public schools? Adam Hamilton addresses this topic in his article “Put God Back in Public Schools?” first on his blog and then published in the Huffington Post, a liberal-oriented news source, in 2013. Hamilton is senior pastor of The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, Kansas, one of the fastest growing churches in the country.…

The video, Doing the Right Thing group Bible study by Charles Colson, Brit Hume, reminded me how morally and spiritually bankrupt our society has become. Greed and corruption run rampant among our business, schools, government, homes, and sadly, even our schools. Pride and greed tend to work together in the lives of many people, leading to divorce, neglect, addictions, theft, and many other immoral actions. Chuck Colson gave an excellent explanation of self-righteousness when he stated, “self-righteousness is the belief that you are so good that you can’t be compromised” (Colson, 2012).…

In order to fulfill the requirements of this paper, I attended a ministry called Common Ground. Common Ground is an after-school mentoring program for underprivileged children in kindergarten through fifth grade that reside here in Waxahachie, Texas. This ministry has volunteers that help the children with their homework, includes a reading program to help the children become better readers and improve their comprehension skills, and allows the volunteers to spend one-on-one time with the children in order to share the love of Christ to them. While attending this ministry I noticed not only one, but several social needs.…

Since the summer of 2015, we have visited an amazing group of educators, ministers, and everyday volunteers who work to bring refugees out of poverty and integrate them into the American lifestyle through faith. Many Churches across the nation have a youth ministry that offers children the opportunity to learn about their divine designer through Scriptural teachings in youth Sunday schools, and other ministering groups supported within the church family. Although, it does help the youth learn about God, Son, and Spirit it falls short in helping children build a closer relationship with God. Children do need to understand what the Bible is all about, but above all, they need to learn how to develop a relationship with God. Moreover, the earlier a person can discover and mature in having a relationship with their Creator—the earlier they can experience His work in their life. This helps children experience His grace and mercy for him or her—eternal…
