Saint Bernard Project Observation Report

Decent Essays
I volunteered in New Orleans for an alternative Spring Break opportunity where I participated in volunteer projects around the city with my travel group throughout the week. During the trip, we volunteered with the Saint Bernard Project, a rebuilding, nonprofit organization whose mission is to help disaster-impacted communities recover. They put a lot of effort into rebuilding homes, fundraising, and preparing for potential disasters. The home we serviced was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. We spent a lot of time installing drywall for the Saint Bernard Project. I also took some time to build a large, wooden tool box that the project leaders greatly appreciated and can use for storage and organization for future projects. When we were not working

Having the opportunity to feel as though you’ve truly made a positive impact on the lives of others is undoubtedly a rewarding experience, and this was exactly what I was seeking when I signed up for an eight day community service trip to Puerto Rico. What I ended up receiving, however, was far more enriching, humbling, and life-altering than I had originally expected. Our main task was to make batches of cement for houses a day in the community of Villa del Rillo. Lots of Puerto Rican houses, mostly in the poorer areas, still haven’t recovered from the effects of Hurricane Hugo, which hit the island almost three decades ago. Difficult manual labor directly under the oppressive heat for hours every day left us sore, dirty, and tired, but gratified.…

I have donated time in my city, state, country and internationally. Through the many opportunities that I have had for community service, I have been able to broaden my views, and look outside my community at how others experience our world. I have visited very diverse communities ranging from the inner city of Detroit, MI to a small, economically depressed village in Honduras, to the mountains of Pennsylvania and inside homes very different from mine in my own…

For my sixty hours of volunteer work I decided to volunteer at a Child Life Center which was in a poverty stricken area in Norfolk, Va. At the child life center my job as a volunteer was to assist the children with their homework, help the staff monitor the children on local field trips, as well as serve as a positive role model for the children. The experience I had at Park Place Child Life Center was one I will honestly never forget. Although I didn’t get any actual counseling experience, I was able to learn the ways that the non-profit organization received their funding, I was able to gain experience in working with the youth, and I was also able to make a positive impact on the lives of children who were considered “at-risk youth”. To go there every day and be able to see the change the children had in their behaviors and how much just some attention and affection from adults impacted their behaviors was honestly amazing.…

I have had various experiences in the last two years, but the one I feel is the most significant is the time I spent volunteering for the Detroit Mission Trip. This opportunity presented itself in June of 2014 through my church, Metro South Church. I spent one week, Monday through Friday, each day-all day, commuting from my home in Brownstown to the inner city of Detroit. Each day of this mission trip consisted of various volunteer jobs. I was one of approximately 100 people that engaged in the process of making life better for others.…

I devoted myself to being a key part of the interact club. I participated in events such as volunteering in local soup kitchens, Spicket River cleanup, earth day and helping to pick up trash around the city of Lawrence. After I saw what a difference I could make by just simply helping my community through the school, I decided to do some community service on my own. Following my trade area I went on to volunteer at Lawrence General Hospital. Throughout my time there, my eyes were opened even more as to what a change one can simply make by dedicating one's time to others.…

A co-worker of mine passed away a few year ago so the company started a charity in recognition of her with all proceeds going to a local animal shelter since she loved animals. I chose ten friends from work since they are the easiest to access because we work with each other every day. The favors I performed was as follows: 1. In order to raise money for prom this year, I accompanied the class of 2019, for 5.5 hours, to a west point game and worked in concessions. I had a great experience working with my peers to achieve a goal that would benefit the senior class. Recently I have engaged in service with my church, for 4 hours, helping to move furniture while they were switching locations. From this experience I learned that sacrificing my time for a communal effort may seem minuscule, but ultimately helps increase efficiency. Also I volunteered at the annual Easter egg hunt at memorial park last weekend for 3.5 hours.…

Ever since I was little I have been involved in 4-H. This program has taught me how to be responsible, organized and a leader by allowing children like myself to be active in their communities. Every year we are required to do a certain amount of voluntary work. I have volunteered at many local events, such as 4-H Fair Clean Up Day, JucFest, Sod Buster and Ethan’s Rodeo. This summer, I was given the privilege to give back to my community in a huge way. Normally, my volunteer opportunities assist a few people or animals, but this opportunity affected an entire village.…

I have worked at a skatepark that offers family friendly amusement for our community. When it is not football season, Friday and Saturday nights are incredibly popular for the youth of Madison to come to our facility to roller skate and play games. We also cater corporate events and birthday parties. For catering events, you obviously must make sure to have plenty of food ready to please the large amount of people. Since a large amount of food is required, there is usually a surplus the employees may eat after, then we dispose of what is left.…
