A while back ago, the pallets used to be shipped to the store, where store employees where make the care packages to send to the food backs. However, the progress had changed, where the store would have barcodes for a care package and customers can choose to buy a care package by scanning the barcode. Then Safeway will send the care package pallets directly to the food banks. These food banks include Second Harvest and Sacred Heart. Employees have to keep track of how many care packages were brought, which is the reason for the annual holiday meeting. There is a new policy, where employees are not allowed to ask customers if they want to purchase a care package, but would have the barcode near the payment area. In the past, customers would complain to upper management about employees asking them to donate, since customers thought the employees were being too aggressive. However, the new policy doesn’t impact the success of Safeway Care Package

The food cards can only be used in large grocery stores to minimize fraud. This also allows the program to regulate what food and goods people can and cannot buy with the card. In the Houston and Dallas areas, purchases from food cards rose by $10 million in the first month that the cards were used, which boosted the economy by allowing the grocery stores to hire more baggers and clerks (Texas). It’s also possible that purchases increased because food stamp recipients were no longer embarrassed to use their services at the grocery store. The food card looked like normal credit or debit cards, so recipients could pay for the food without feeling ashamed.…
