Safety Net Programs Safety Net Programs are used to help protect living standards of families and individuals. These programs help people that need assistance with unemployment, income loss and poverty, physical and mental illness and disability, family disintegration, and old age. There are different types of Safety Net Programs. There is social insurance is a trust fund, where payroll tax on what an individual’s earns and receive benefits are based on what they contributed in their lifetime. The next safety net program is means-tested. This is when someone has to prove that their income is low enough so they qualify to help with basic needs, an example is food stamps. Social Security is another example, but is run through the nation’s capital. …show more content…
There are also programs with entitlement, in which people who meet certain requirements automatically get payments. Since these payments are automatic they are expenditures are locked into the federal budget and Congress are the only ones that can fix the margin of the budget. There is too much money being spent on these programs and still these programs continue to grow. One reason there has been a good amount of decline over the years is the poverty rate of the elderly and the high poverty among children. In the article, THE SAFETY NET; Living on Nothing but Food Stamps, is about how families struggle even when they receive help from safety net programs. The article tells how,” food stamps use [is] at a record high and surging by the day . . . about six million Americans receiving food stamps report they have no income.” The numbers of people in safety net programs are rising and it is getting difficult for people to contribute to their family financially. There are families struggling, many rely on safety net programs for assistance and have very little in their pockets. American is the largest trading nation, causing the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade. This agreement was made to lower, and then eliminate, tariffs on most traded goods and to end nontariff trade restrictions. Soon changed to the World Trade Organization, this was an agency made to enforce and resolve trade disputes between nations. The North America Free Trade Agreement involves the United States, Mexico, and Canada to take away nearly all barriers to trade and investment among the three countries. People worry that new technology would take over jobs and services threatens firms that are important for the health. America also takes a big role when with global economic instability, in which the country is concerned with stabilization global finical markets and recusing other countries that need help. The United States is forced to share global financial and economic leadership with other countries, even though the country is struggling. Even intellectual property rights had become an issue. A major concern is the protection of life saving drugs, in which Americans believe companies should provide drugs at a lower price or allow poor countries to make generic brands. The use of life saving drugs bends the trading rules and allows countries to produce these generic brands. The United States contributes at least 1.0
