Safety for children in day care facilities
Economic and social changes in the world are forcing mothers and fathers to enter the workforce, leaving no other option then to leave their child in a daycare facility. Child care has become a fact of life and many parents use child care facilities from infancy through kindergarten. Making a decision on what daycare facility that will insure the safety of their child is essential to every parent. A parent wants a facility that will protect and educate their child. It challenging finding a facility and sometimes requires the parent to visit multiple facilities prior to making a choice. To ensure that the safety of their child is secured in a day care parents need to check the track record through government agencies or conduct their own background check on the daycare facility or provider. By Insuring that the day care facility is licensed by the state. Federal laws require states to have polices in place to protect the health and safety of children in child care (Child Care Aware, 2018). In November 2014, the federal Child Care and Development Block Grant (CCDBG) was reauthorized (Child Care Aware, 2018). This law was able to change requirements for child care background checks. This required that all states conduct extensive background checks on regulated child care providers. This ensure that all employees that have immediate interaction with children like bus drivers, janitors, kitchen staff, administrative employees, volunteers have a comprehensive background check. Before any employee works that are required to have a background check and after certain amount of years of employments another background check must be conducted. A comprehensive background check includes the state and federal criminal history check using individual’s name and individual fingerprints. Providers qualifications are very minimum. They must be 18 years or older, have an education level, usually a high school diploma or equivalent, and 40 hours of initial and ongoing training (Child Care Aware, 2018). They also require a Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation(CPR), first aid, and basic safety and health training (Child Care Aware, 2018. Some states have requirements for annual training or training hours required to renew or maintain a child care license (Child Care Aware, 2018). Annual reviews are reinforced for staff to learn new information and skills. The following are some annual training topics like child abuse preventions, identification and reporting, Child development and learning, health, safety, and nutrition.
