The documentary that my group created was titled “Safety at Central High School”. We chose this title because our film focused on Central and its safety issues. In this documentary we wanted to not only show the issues of safety within Central, but also how it connects to the recent mass school shootings across the United States. We also wanted to get an understanding of the students perspective and if they themselves feel safe at Central.
The demographic our film concentrated the most on was high school kids. The reason for that was because the conflicts that we presented affected them the most. The safety issues shown in the archival news footages were student on student violence or the student polls on how they themselves viewed Central. Age plays a huge role in this documentary because of the transition from the focus on young adults focus to an adult point of view on the conflicts of school safety. The interviews we conducted were all with adults who could give us special insight on our topics of safety. An interview with a student enrolled in Central would have added more of a solid student stance on safety other than the polls and newscasts the featured students and help show the disparity in

Our documentary starts out with an establishing shot of the Central building to show that this building will be are overall main focus. This is the location where we got our interviews, A-roll, B-roll and some of our archival footage. The setting of Central is important because all school have their own history and culture around them. Centrals history specifically helped us find our niche and help us zero in on what we wanted this documentary to show. School safety in relation to the recent mass school shootings is an interesting issue in itself, but when we were able to hone all of that into a familiar setting and have it relate to our peers it added something we needed into the

Over the last two months that I’ve been at Syracuse University, The Department of Public Safety (DPS) has played a major role in keeping me informed about a lot of suspicious incidents that have taken place. I remember, once an alert was sent out stating that some lady who claimed to be a pregnant nurse was approaching students and asking them for money. I briefly read about the incident, until the next morning I found out that it actually happened with one of my classmates in my WRT 105 class. Hearing about her experience was hilarious, yet terrifying at the same time and honestly, I don 't know what I’d do if I were in her place. The Department of Public Safety is one of the most influential and important departments of the University.…

Another theme touched on the subject, "Dealing with Disasters," which includes the accessibility of guns to "young people" (Aronson 37). The book disagrees with the National Rifle Association (NRA) that states "Guns don't kill people, people do," by saying that the presence of guns in a home increase the probability that young people will use them on other young people. In addition, the book also centers around a specific research that all the school massacres had in common: all the shooters were adolescent boys (Aronson 48). The author makes a theme of bullying and taunting and suggests reducing or eliminate it by implementing serious policies such as zero-tolerance policies that many schools have for weapons, drugs, and sometimes fighting (Aronson 71). Lastly, the authors major theme is introducing the "jigsaw" classroom method and address its problems and benefits. "…

The third and most recent large mass killing happened in Newtown, Connecticut at Sandy Hook Elementary school. The shootings were arguably the most heart-wrenching deaths to recover from. It happened on December 12th, 2012, when Adam Lanza shot his mother at his own home, then drove to the elementary school and murdered many children and teachers. This massacre was different due to the fact that most of the casualties were First graders. Adam shot his way into the school and through the school’s security system.…

His speech was directed to multiple people as he opened his speech with “To all the families, first responders, to the community of Newtown, clergy, guests” (1). He conviced everyone that a school shooting could have happened anywhere and they are not alone by saying “They lost their lives in a school that could have been any school” (5). In the book This Is Where It Ends Marieke Nijkamp, writes about the terrifying fifty four minute Opportunity High School experiences an active shooter situation. This book was published by Sourcebooks Fire in Naperville, Illinois on January 5th 2016. This book is intense, face paced and easy to read, but I would not select this book to be offered to seniors in our classroom library due to the sensitive subjects covered and the reading level it offers. This Is Where It Ends is written in 4 different perspectives and gives a minute by minute play of the horrifying shooting happening inside the Opportunity High School auditorium. One of the 4 perspectives is told by Autumn, she is the sister of the shooter.…

We have come to learn over the course of time that American Native Indians still have no clear answer on whether they are considered sovereign or not. The definition of sovereignty is to possess power, and although some Indian Tribes are climbing the ladder in earning this right, there is one reservation imparticularly that is suffering due to the neglect of the US Government. The Pine Ridge Reservation is one of the poorest areas in America and suffers great poverty due to the actions of the US Government. The Snyder Act of 1921 charged the US Department of the Interior with responsibility for providing education, medical and social services to many Native nations and tribes, including the Oglala Lakota, yet this Act is not showing any…
