Fireworks- Safety and Use Many people enjoy watching fireworks. Whether it’s New Year’s or Independence Day, they are a very popular spectacle. Fireworks can be a fun, enjoyable way to experience the holidays. Fireworks are a beautiful display of chemistry, but many accidents can happen just by using them, so it is integral that one understands the importance of safety and how to practice it. A multitude of things go into making a firework launch. The most common firework is the aerial shell. Figure 1 above shows the aerial shell, which contains a bursting charge surrounded by black powder and stars. When the fuse is lit, it launches from a mortar tube. At the same time, a delay fuse inside ignites. This ignition leads to another area that contains the bursting charge and black powder, which is followed by the explosions fireworks are known for (Hadhazy).
Fireworks can give off wondrous, colorful sights. Combustible shells, or stars, are inside the firework. The stars contain salts within them. The colors come from those salts, which will give off a color when burnt. It is like if one were to burn Sodium Chloride. It would give off a yellow flame. Figure 2 gives another example, showing Lithium Hydroxide giving off a pink flame (Bryner). Why do they give off colors? When burnt, the electrons move to other energy levels. This emits the extra energy, which appears in a colorful flame (Introductory Chemistry).…
