Author Timothy Wheeler starts out his article with an incident happened at the Cleveland’s Success Tech Academy where four people were injured with no mortality as a result of quick elimination of the shooters. He moves on to point out the vulnerable areas of the ineffective school security and the gun free zone policy that makes school ground an easy target for psychopath killers. To prove his points, he gives us the mass murder of 1999 in Los Angeles Jewish day-care center that committed by Buford Furrow’s, and the raped and the massacre that happened between September and October 2006 in Bailey, Colorado which committed by Nickel Mines. He brings his point across that allows gun at school can be effective to stop the shooter from further executing innocent victims.…
Building 1143 is a challenge in of itself with over 32,000 square feet of area, 25 entries and exits, 12 corridors, two auditoriums, 38 classrooms, 54 offices, large amounts of open space in four common areas, and most of the walls of the building are actual windows. A positive aspect is there are many areas, such as the classrooms, that are optimal to establish a barricade between individuals and the active shooter during lockdown procedures. Additionally, with 25 entries and exits there are plenty of options for personnel who want to escape an active shooter situation. These positive features of building 1143 are important for all individuals to know and could result in lives saved, however, the layout also presents a complex challenge to mitigate or deter an active shooter threat. Features of building 1143…
Between 2000 and 2013, an estimated 160 active shooter incidents occurred within the United States resulting in 1043 casualties, 483 of which died (DHS, 2015). No pattern or commonality exists in the selection of victims; which supports that these types of situations evolve rapidly and are very dynamic. This essay will provide a training scenario for an active shooter response. There will be a discussion of the organizational goal, adjusted procedures, and their strengths and weaknesses within the organization, with an overall emphasis on effective communication.…
Summary of Zenobia Harris’s Argument Zenobia Harris argues in an article in the VSU student newspaper The Spectator titled, “Guns on Campus Will Hurt Not Help,” that students and faculty carrying guns on campus will do more harm than good. She presents a selected study from The RAND Corporation as well as citing a CNN article, balanced with a counterpoint to show that the cons outweigh the pros when it comes to high stress situations involving firearms. Harris compares the argument from Concealed Campus that students “need to know how to protect themselves from an immediate threat” (Harris), to a study completed by the RAND Corporation that concluded “on average, officers hit their targets only 30 percent of the time” (Harris).…
In order to better prepare myself if there is an active shooter on campus is to start scanning the room or buildings I go to on a daily basis to get an idea of the best escape routes and hiding places in that building. In order to communicate safety to residents to prepare them if an active shooter is on campus or in the building is to have an informational event that goes over the Run Hide Fight method and other ways they can prepare. Also, having posters with reminders around the hall on how to prepare inside and outside the building would be helpful. To remain safe during an active shooter incident, I would have to stay calm and collective in order to find the nearest exit or hiding spot. If it is absolutely impossible for me to get out…
Active Shooter Procedures Since the beginning of January 2018, there have been multiple school shootings across America. Shootings are becoming more prevalent, and although active shooter drills are being implemented to prepare for such instances, are they actually effective? Is there more that can be done to defend against these violent acts within schools? Yes, students and teachers can both be more prepared when encountering these terrifyingly violent situations.…

The myth that school shooters just simply snapped could not be further from the truth. The FBI reports that “93 percent planned their attack in advance. ‘The path towards violence is an evolutionary one, with signposts along the way’” (Cullen 323). This gives teachers as well as parents and other students an opportunity to notice signs, making many school shootings preventable.…
Devastating, frightening and incomprehensible, school shootings are hardly new to the United States of America. Statistics gathered from just ten school shootings, account for one hundred and thirty-three dead and one hundred and forty-two injured, representing the work product of America’s ten deadliest school shooters. To qualify as one of the ten deadliest, the shooter must have struck a minimum of ten individuals and caused at least five deaths. Yet, the question remains, what type of person would enter a school with the purpose to extinguish human life?…
After the Sandy Hook (2013) shooting the National Rifle Association suggested that every school in America no matter the size have armed guards. Looking the enrollment size of a school with less than three hundred people about twenty-three percent of schools had security guards or sworn in officers in (2005-2006) school year; and about twenty-seven point six percent in (2007-2008) and the number goes down to twenty-five percent in (2009-2010) school year. When the enrollment size increases to 300-499 students, the same pattern occurs with a school enrollment size 300 or less. In the school year 2005-2006 about thirty percent of schools had security guards or sworn in officers. In the school year 2007-2008 the number increases to thirty-six percent of school nation wide having armed personnel in schools.…
School shootings are a trend that unfortunately has been getting popular for more than a decade. This is causing schools to increase security and prepare for a potential war against unknown individuals. This has shown a negative effect on a significant amount of students who now see school as unsafe. Metal detectors, security cameras, and many other security safeguards have been a regular necessity for schools. Instead of using these things as a last resort effort to prevent violence there needs to be a less invasive plan in place that limits the security presence on campuses without it being overwhelming.…
Gun Violence on campus has been a recurring issue in the past several years with several instances of the mass shooting like the ones in Arizona state university and on Virginia tech. “.Timothy Wheeler wrote a piece called “There 's a reason they choose schools” which was published On May 1,2007,in the issue of National Review. In this article,Wheeler talks about how there may need to be a need to allow guns on campus so we can better protect ourselves against shooters. Another piece used is the poster “Gone but not forgotten”published by Amy Dion at Northern Illinois university in the UCDA campus violence poster project.…
Imagine if you walked into the classroom tomorrow morning and heard birds chirping. Imagine if you sat down at your desk, prepared to start your day. You wave towards your teacher who just got back from their day off. The teacher stands up and begins to talk about the day's objectives. But when they open their mouth to speak the intercom turns on then says, “We are under lock down, this is not a drill, take action immediately.”…
If guns are combined with such activities, injury can play a big factor and sometimes even death. Guns are used for personal protection, not to injure someone for no apparent reason. With the increase in violence in today’s world, allowing guns on college campuses does not appear to be a logical, productive policy for any institution of higher learning to have,…
These are the statistics of only three of the many school shootings that take place nationwide. Students and teachers were fatally harmed for no reason at all by troubled teens who struggled in their everyday lives. If they had been given proper help, would that have made a difference? If the schools had better security and safety precautions, would it have saved the many valuable lives lost? Although school shootings are insufferable tragedies, they benefit modern society with improvements in security tactics, mental health services, and crime prevention through environmental design.…
