One nurse. Six patients. Exhaustion. Stress. Overworked. These components can describe what a nurse goes through daily when they arrive at their job. What must happen for nurses to have an easier workload or a day that does not come with the constant stress of having to attend to more patients than one person can handle? Only one thing can happen to ensure that nurses get the care and dedication that they deserve and that is for staffing laws to be enforced to regulate safety for the patient and provide nurses with the staffing that they need. There are multiples laws such as The National Nursing Shortage Reform and Patient Advocacy Act and Safe Nurse Staffing for Patient Safety and Quality Care Act, that organizations are trying to get their …show more content…
The law requires additional RNs be assigned based on a documented patient classification system that measures patient needs and nursing care, including severity of illness and complexity of clinical need” (California RN Staffing Ratio Law, 2004). This law has been the staple to nurses across the country. It allows room for nurses to do their job and do it correctly without having to choose one patient over the other, as well as helping them become more satisfied with their jobs. There was a study to see the impact the nurse to patient ratio had on nurses and it showed that it notably lowered the likelihood of patient’s mortality and that nurses’ “burnout and job dissatisfaction were lower, and nurses reported consistently better quality of care” (Impact of Nurse-to-Patient Ratios: Implications of the California Nurse Staffing Mandate for the Other States, 2011). This confirms the notion that laws such as this one do nothing but help increase the quality of care given to patients as well as ensuring that their nurses are satisfied with their
