Are GMOs Safe “They Say”
When it comes to the topic of the safety of GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms) most of us will readily agree that it is a highly debatable, and controversial topic. Though one might argue that the relatively recent developments in the field of GMOs have the inherent risk of unknown negative health consequences, the claimed “ side effects can be described as little more than unsubstantiated. Since their conception in the mid 1990s, GMOs have been extensively studied, with over 1700 peer reviewed studies published between 2003 and 2013 alone. Hundreds of those were independently funded, with no conflict of interest or compensation from the Agriculture Industry. One could also argue that GMOs can, in some cases, be even safer than Organic produce. This is due to the fact that the amount of product testing before a specific strain is allowed to be put on the market is considerably more rigorous in comparison to unmodified organisms.…

In Anna Miller's article on genetically modified foods written in April of 2015, she questions the harmfulness of using genetically modified organisms in food we eat. Miller uses many sources describing why GMO foods are unsafe for consumption, for example, “..the FDA has approved genetically modified foods should mean there safe, that’s a false assumption since the administration skirted its own rules.” The FDA may make rules about whether GMO’s are safe they also use scientific studies and research on the organism before concluding the safety of it and though it seems that using an organism in food is bad keep in mind that six of the top selling drugs are based on GMO technology. In Miller’s article she states that “animal studies and farmers’…

When it comes to the topic of the safety behind GMOs, many of us will readily agree that we are uneducated on the risks and benefits they present in our bodies and to the environment. Where this argument usually ends, however, is on the question of the advantages genetically engineering seeds and crops can have during the growing process of the crops and for the environment as well. Genetically Modified Organisms, or GMOs, have created tension on what is ethical in the food industry. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, GMOs are “genetically engineered foods [that] have had foreign genes inserted into their genetic codes.” Also, many places have found that there are multiple positives and negatives to GMOs, which is why there is such a divide on whether they are healthy to consume. Furthermore, people should know why GMOs are being made, the difference between GMOs and selective breeding, and how genes are chosen and used in GMOs.…
