In Nicholas Sparks Safe Haven, readers learn that when life throws problems, work through them. Because you can’t run away from them. In the story “Safe Haven”, the conflict is that Kevin Tierney, Katie’s ex-lover, hunts her down trying to find her after she runs away because of his abusive behavior to her in their relationship. She tries to continue through her life without him, hoping he won’t find her again and take her back home, but when her life throws her obstacles, she solves them in her own way.
Katie ran away to a small town in North Carolina called South Port. Kevin thought she was dead till he saw her in the newspaper and went right to where she was. Kristen and Katie then fell asleep on the couch together until katie was awaken by a noise. Right then, she could just tell it was going to be Alex. She snuck away from Kristen to go check out the noise. She went outside to find Kevin dumping gasoline all over the house. She started freaking out on him and told him to stop. Kevin continued talking about how she shouldn’t have left and how “well he treated her”. Then he pulled out a gun and started waving it around. She tries to calm him down until he started choking her. He sets the house on fire, then Katie and Kristen are both in trouble. Katie starts to solve this problem then by yelling for help, then getting away from Kevin.
Once Alex finally got there after seeing the house burning, he sees Katie struggling with Kevin and Kristen stuck in the burning house. He goes to save Kristen first, while Katie is fighting her own battle and ends up shooting him as self defense. Finally, they all we safe
