In todays society the media constantly shows and glamorizes the hair of other races outside of African Americans. The term “good hair” is often associated with straight, long and silky hair types. Instead African American women hair is associated with terms like thick, kinky and nappy. These aren’t just terms anymore that are used freely instead, they’ve become very stereotypical and judgmental to the black race. This puts pressure on African American women to feel doubtful of their natural hair, so much that black women use chemicals to make their hair silky straight, which ultimately result in damaged hair.…

During Ventura’s interview with O’Connor, she discovered that various daily personal hygiene and beauty products ranging from toothpaste and antiperspirant, to shampoo, lotion, and makeup contain ingredients that are linked to everything from acne and rashes, to brain damage, cancer and nervous system damage. Additionally, Ventura further supports her claim with evidence from O’Connor’s book where she states “scientists are finding that women with high levels of certain chemicals in their blood and urine - BPAs and phthalates are the two big ones - are having babies with genital birth defects in baby boys at much higher rates than people who have low levels of those chemicals” (Ventura, 2012). Ventura explains that there are not many laws regulating what substances companies use in their manufacturing processes, therefore giving the government insufficient power to ensure the safety of personal care products stocked on retail shelves. To combat such inadequacies, Ventura never leaves the house without her list of bad chemicals while shopping for…

Often, women walk down the beauty aisle of a department and grocery stores and see all types of merchandise for their hair, but not many know what the products are right for them. They see products that promise to rejuvenate dry, damaged hair; volumize limp, flat hair; straighten curly hair, and regenerate thinning hair. With my hair being a kinky curl, when I was younger, I would ask my mother if we could buy relaxers and apply them at home. She would give me the same answer every time, “This should only be performed by a professional if you do not want to ruin your hair.”…
