You never know how will you will react in an emergency until it happens to you. So many accidents happen each day, we see someone rear end another and feel sympathy for those involved. But when you see a more serious accident you realize how short life is and how easy it is to be in an accident. A few years ago I saw a bad accident, though thankfully not fatal I will forever be a more cautious driver because just a moment of distraction can cause a lifetime of change. It was a peaceful day on our Amish friends’ farm in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. My family and our friends were all gathered around a picnic table, adoring barn cats, and saying our goodbyes to another successful vacation. People remember many sounds …show more content…
I asked Sadie, our Amish friend, what her address was so I could tell the operator. While I was on the phone with the operator I ran over to the Jeep where my mom was sitting on the ground with the people from the car. I described the woman, presumably the mother, who was sitting in the ground, her skin a awful pale grey color who was not fully responding and her two daughters who were fully alert and sitting with my mom. The woman from the car behind the Jeep,a coworker, came over and told us who she was and showed us that she lived in sight, a half a football field away. Sylvan, another Amish friend, ran up to her house and told her husband. Another passerby came over to help and stabilized the woman and was keeping her responsible but I will never forget the color of the womans skin and the distant look in her eyes as her two daughters, covered in cuts, cried out for her. FInally the police and medics came and we were able to walk away and give them space to work. I looked at the mangled Jeep and it hit me how fragile life is. There were no other cars involved, no animals in the street, and that she was distracted by something that caused her to flip her car over the road.
After everything calmed down we packed the rest of our car and started out on our six hour drive back to New York, one of the most tense drives of my life. Many accidents happen within miles of our homes because we are relying on muscle memory and drive it so often we
