"Safe At Home" by Mike Lupica is about a boy who catches for the JV team at his school. His name is Nick Crandall. His best friend is Gracie Wright. Nick was adopted by the Crandall family. Mr. Crandall is a English professor and Mrs. Crandall is a Math professor. Nick struggles in school, but he is a great catcher. He hates to read "real" books, he loves to read his comic books and his favorite comic is Captain Marvel. The catcher for varsity, Bobby Mazzilli, gets hurt before the first game. So the varsity head coach, Coach Williams, comes and tell Nick he is on the varsity. Nick doesn't know what to think. When he goes to varsity practice he gets a since of no one but Jack Elmore likes him. Especially the number one pitcher Gary Watson. …show more content…
My likes are that I can relate to Nick, because last year I went from JV catcher to Varsity but I only played three games at JV. He likes comic books and superheroes and I can relate to that too, because I like to watch shows about superheroes and movies too. He had to make friends on varsity and he had to handle the struggle of not being able to throw. He knows he can do it, but at the same time he can't. He had to go through the struggle that he didn't know his real parents. He has to go through struggles and he doesn't just stop and gives up. I like that he has a best friend that lives across the street that he can go and talk to. The book talks about how Captain Marvel and his he gets his powers. It explains how he feels as if no one can see who he is when he has his catching equipment on. I do not like how it talks about how he got adopted and what he did with the family that didn't adopt him. I don't like how it talks about his foster family.i don't like how the varsity team treats him when he joins. I like how it goes through the games and tells you what happens. I wish they would give more detail about the games. The book "Safe At Home" is a book to be read by baseball people or people who enjoy the sport. I recommend that this boom should be read, but it helps if you know things about baseball or you wouldn't understand the book and some of the things it

On an asphalt baseball field in Brooklyn, two teams from local Yeshivah schools meet. At first, it just seems like a baseball game between two Jewish high school teams. But the game quickly turns into a holy war when the caftan and ear lock wearing Hasidic team begins to taunt and bully the less conservative “hell-bound sinners” on the other team. Hate boils as Danny Saunders, the leader of the Hasidic team, purposely hits a pitch right back at the pitcher, crushing his glasses and landing him in the hospital for a week. This is how Chaim Potok 's book The Chosen begins.…

Another thing I liked about this book was that the main character went on an adventure and discovered himself. One thing in this book that worked for me was how Hinton transitioned pieces of the story. A good example of this is in the beginning when Travis was sent away from his mom and stepdad to go live with his uncle. This book is similar to S.E. Hinton’s other stories like “The Outsiders” and “Rumble Fish”. These stories all involve troubled youths living in hard times.…
