To maintain peace and prevent war, President George Bush gave Saddam Hussein an ultimatum on March 17, 2003 ordering Hussein to leave Iraq within 48 hours or face military action. Saddam Hussein refused to leave and two days later, President Bush formally declared war on Iraq. In an address to the United States on March 19th, President Bush said, “We have no ambition in Iraq, except to remove a threat and restore control of that country to its own people.”(loc.gov) The military forces that mobilized to prepare for war against Iraq were made up of a coalition of thirty four countries; including the United States, Great Britain, Australia, and United Arab Emirates. Coalition countries provided personnel, access to military bases, political support, and other military resources. The movement of coalition forces became known as Operation Iraqi Freedom.
