Imagine this; a man in Iraq is fighting for his country. While he is not on his homeland, he is fighting for what that homeland’s beliefs stand for. He is fighting to free the country of Kuwait. Often time, wars are believed and seen as a mean to defend the home nation from physical catastrophe of foreign land and soldiers are praised and honored for their sacrifice. Not often enough do the common people take the time to scrape the surface with sayings like “thank you for your time” to look at the understanding that even though a war “makes men” and unites them, Hynes says that it isolates and cuts them off from other people. The Civil War claimed the lives of over 620,000 soldiers; these statistics were not equaled by the combined toll of any other American conflicts until the War in Vietnam. The devastation of the battles was received throughout the country and on both sides of the conflict. Due to the drastic economic differences in economies in the North, with its booming industry, and South, which had mainly cotton plantations, the Civil War was initiated. The opposing moral views of slavery, and therefore the political strain between the North and South was transfigured by the influence of the economy. In the book, Iraq was believed to be getting a free economy and a free society, however, America had a different plan: to bring democracy to Iraq (130). At the time, the countries biggest concern was unemployment, with an estimated forty percent falling into that category. However, the USAID-Treasury document did nothing to change that (131).…
