In Wrinkle in Time the Happy Medium next uses her crystal ball to show the three kids a battle between IT and the stars. The star sacrifices itself to fight the Dark thing. The children then realize that the star that sacrifices herself is indeed Mrs. Whatsit. In ?Field of Dreams? the one who probably made the biggest sacrifice was Ray?s wife. Not only, did Ray?s vision by way of the voice, ?If you build it, he will come? have an effect on him; but, also a profound effect on his wife. She stood by Ray, did without, and encouraged him against all odds to carry out his mission. There he spent a few months before he was deported to Auschwitz. Speak of ultimate sacrifice?that is what Kolbe gave. Approximately thirty days after Kolbe?s arrival at Auschwitz, three prisoners disappeared from the camp. As a punishment, the officers rounded up 10 prisoners to be taken to an underground cell and starved to death. One prisoner pleaded with the officer that he had children and a family, and Kolbe volunteered to take his place.
It has been reported that Kolbe survived without food or water for two weeks in the underground prison cell. He was the last of the ten to die, eventually executed by lethal injection. Saint Maximillian Kolbe?was beatified and then canonized as a saint by Pope John Paul II in 1982.
Kolbe?s quote is one that this writer recalls when times seem tough: ?Let us not forget that Jesus not only suffered, but also rose in glory; so, too, we go to the glory of the Resurrection by way of suffering and the Cross.?
