Sacrifice is the ability to protect others for their sake, not yours. To be successful, you need to sacrifice, and you need to take risks. "The Martian" is about a botanist Mark Watney that got left behind on Mars due to a big storm that took place while their "Ares 3" mission was in progress. He needs to survive on limited resources and must find a way to return to earth. Andy Weir illustrates the positive impact of sacrifice in “The Martian” since Mark takes one for the team, Mark risks his own life, and NASA’s team helps Mark. During their "Ares 3" mission there was a big storm incoming. The team had to get on the ship before the storm came. Throughout the situation, Mark takes one for the team through the demonstration of Mark choosing …show more content…
With a few resources Mark had to provide himself water and get more food. He came up with the plan to grow crops, but his only problem was not having enough water. In order to keep his crops alive Mark needed a ton of water. Later, as days went by, Mark came up with a solution. His solution was producing water with hydrogen. Mark knew Hydrogen can be dangerous as it can blow up, but he sacrificed and stuck with his plan anyways "Hydrogen is dangerous because it can blow up. But it can only blow up if there's oxygen around. Hydrogen without oxygen is harmless" (Weir 19). Mark is willing to sacrifice his own life in order for his crops to remain alive and grow. He sacrificed the chance of getting blown up during this process. After all, Mark wanted his crops to grow, he made water with hydrogen, for this to work, Mark needed a generator. When he first tried making water, while burning the hydrogen the generator blew up on him "One minute I was happily burning hydrogen; the next I was on the other side of the Hab: and a lot of stuff was knocked over."(Weir 100). After that hard work, Mark’s generator blew up on him and he had to restart all over again. He sacrificed his own life as he persevered through. Mark Watney knew there were a few ways getting back to earth. Eventually, he came up with an idea which would get him back to earth the fastest way, but not the safest way. Doing this would have a high chance in killing him, so he wanted to test it "Before I risk my life with this contraption. I need to test it." (Weir 570). Mark knows what the outcome of the situation will be. He’ll either die from the contraption or just make it to earth, but he lacks a choice. In all, Mark didn't have many resources he managed to come up with a plan that allowed him to grow crops with water which provided him more food. He comes up with a plan to make it back to earth, but there's a huge risk of

However, Mark Watney is not the first person on Mars. He is part of a group that is the third crew to explore Mars. The physical setting of the book influenced the character greatly, due to the fact that the physical setting was all he had to survive with. With Martian soil, Watney creates a potato farm, and with his engineering skills he creates water by literately combining oxygen and hydrogen (almost killing himself in the process). The climate of Mars has an effect on Watney as well.…

McWilliams does this by keeping in mind that “water usage, fertilizer types, processing methods and packaging techniques” and ” far outweighs the energy it takes to transport food”. McWilliams reasons that because all of these other factors also contribute to the problems of the food industry, food miles are not the only component that make up and add to these problems. Throughout the whole trip on Mars, Watney remained happy (most of the time) and never got down on himself even if he was in the worst situations. For example, in the book when one of the HAB ( the house that NASA sent for the crew to live in) walls gets blown up, Mark doesn’t get upset instead he makes a joke about it when he is in the process of fixing it. “ ‘Yes, of course duct tape works… Duct tape is magic and should be worshipped.’” (220) This text evidence is just one example of how Mark adds humor to tough situation. His humorous personality helped him to survive on the red planet of Mars because Mark could always crack a joke even in the worst…
